My previous analog photographs were all selenium toned silver-gelatin prints on double-weight, air-dried glossy fiber based paper. These new digital prints are decidely brown toned prints made on cotton papers with a dead matte surface, a considerable departure from my previous work. I strongly favor this new look.
All of the photographs you see in these galleries are printed using only the finest pigment inks on 100% cotton rag museum quality paper. No shortcuts of any kind are taken anywhere. Those already familiar with my work may notice that my prices for these new pigment-on-paper, digital prints are substantially lower, in some cases by hundreds of dollars, than my earlier silver based prints. This, despite the fact that digital prints are better in every way. Digital printing has brought down my costs of materials and labor and in the spirit of reaching a wider audience, I have reduced prices accordingly. However, as individual images grow in popularity I will gradually raise the price on those images.
I am in the late throes of making the transition from analog to digital photography. All of the images you see here were printed digitally but many, especially the images from Peru, were shot on conventional film. After two years of concerted effort I can now produce a digital print that is markedly superior in every way to the silver prints I once made. I find Photoshop has allowed me to pay more attention to the creative aspect of fine art photography and less to the drudgery of chemical processing. To that extent, it has made me a better artist.
I started making digital prints in late 2008 and therefore have faced the daunting task of scanning years of negatives and then reprinting everything of significance that I have ever done. It has taken the better part of two years to get up to speed as it were and therefore I have been slow to fill in these galleries. Please be patient as I catch up a few decades.
I have limited remaining inventory of silver-gelatin prints from the Arequipa and Santa Catalina series in 16x20 at $600 per print. If interested, contact me for title availability and purchase information.
